Health insurance in Michigan, 2027
Michigan uses HealthCare.gov and expanded Medicaid, so the line between Medicaid and a tax credit is the number to know.

Michigan uses HealthCare.gov
Michigan does not run its own marketplace. You compare plans and apply for a tax credit on HealthCare.gov, or with a licensed agent who works with it.
For 2026 coverage, 497,064 Michiganders picked a Marketplace plan during open enrollment.1

The dates for 2027
Open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Choose a plan by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1, 2027.2

- December 15Last day to choose a plan that starts January 1 (key step)
- January 15, 2027Open enrollment ends
- February 1, 2027Coverage starts for plans chosen December 16 to January 15
Heads up: Choose a plan after December 15 and it starts February 1, not January 1. If nothing else covers you in January, that is a month without coverage.
Medicaid or a tax credit: the 138% line
Michigan expanded Medicaid. Adults with income under 138% of the poverty level can qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan; that is $22,025 for one person. Above that line, a Marketplace tax credit usually takes over, up to 4 times the poverty level.
Because the two programs meet at one number, a small change in your income estimate can move you from one to the other. Medicaid and the Marketplace check different months, so tell both about changes.3
New in 2027: Healthy Michigan Plan work rules
Who it affects: Healthy Michigan Plan members aged 19 to 64.
From January 1, 2027, many Healthy Michigan Plan members aged 19 to 64 need to meet new work requirements, or qualify for an exemption, to keep their coverage. Exemptions include pregnancy and the months after birth, some people with complex health needs and certain caregivers. Most members also move from yearly to six-month renewals.4
What to do: Open every letter from MDHHS, and call us if a renewal or work notice arrives.
A family of three
For a family of three, Medicaid for the adults reaches about $37,700 a year, and children qualify up to about $59,300 through Michigan’s Medicaid for children.35
