What is hospital indemnity insurance?
Hospital indemnity insurance pays you a set amount of cash if you are admitted to the hospital. It is not health insurance coverage.
Many policies pay a fixed amount for each day you are in the hospital. The money comes to you, not to the hospital.1
- Pays the hospital and doctors
- Follows its own rules
- You still owe the deductible
- Pays you cash
- A set amount, not your bill
- Not health insurance coverage
How does hospital indemnity insurance work?
You pick a daily or per-stay amount when you buy. If you are admitted for a covered reason, the policy pays that amount.
The payment does not depend on the hospital bill. Your health plan still pays its share of the bill under its own rules.1
- You are admittedA covered hospital stay begins
- You file a claimSend the policy’s paperwork
- You are paidA set amount, to you (key step)
- You decideDeductible, copays, rent or bills
Is hospital indemnity insurance worth it?
It can be worth a look if you have a high deductible and a hospital stay would strain your budget. It can also help if a stay would mean lost income.
It may not be worth it if you already have savings to cover your deductible, or if the premium would stretch your budget. It never replaces a health plan.
The amounts above are an example. Real amounts and premiums depend on the policy and your age.
What to do: Ask us to compare your deductible with what a policy would pay. We go through prices in your free consultation.
Does hospital indemnity pay for ER visits?
Some plans do and some do not. Many pay only when you are admitted, and some also pay for an ER visit or an ambulance ride.
Each policy says what counts. Ask before you buy.
What does hospital indemnity not cover?
It does not pay your medical bills. It only pays its set amount.
Policies can have waiting periods, exclusions for conditions you already have, and limits on days paid. Maternity benefits are limited or left out on some policies.
Read the list of what counts as an admission, and ask us if any line is unclear.
- Observation stays
- Waiting periods
- Conditions you already have
- Limits on days paid

Heads up: An observation stay, when you are in a hospital bed but not formally admitted, may not count as an admission.
What to do: Bring the policy outline to us before you decide. We check how it treats observation stays and waiting periods.
