How much does dental insurance cost?
Individual dental plans average about $15 a month for a dental HMO and about $42 a month for a dental PPO. These are national averages for 2024, not quotes.
Your price depends on your age, where you live and the plan.1
Is dental insurance worth it?
It can be worth it if you expect regular care. Preventive care is usually covered at 100%, so the cleanings and exams may pay for much of the premium.
It may not be worth it if you rarely see a dentist and the plan has long waiting periods. Compare the yearly premium with what you would use.1
What to do: Add up one year of cleanings, exams and any work you expect. Then compare it with the plan’s yearly cost.
How does dental insurance work?
Dental plans pay a share of each service. Preventive care is usually covered most. Basic and major work is covered at lower shares, and you pay the rest.
Many plans also have a yearly maximum and waiting periods for bigger work.1
- Cleanings and exams
- Most plans pay 100%
- Fillings
- Often about 80% in network
- Crowns and bridges
- Often about 50%
What is a good dental insurance?
A good plan has your dentist in its network, a yearly maximum that fits the work you expect, and short waiting periods.
Check four things: the network, the yearly maximum, the waiting periods and the share it pays on major work.
The best plan depends on your teeth and your budget, so we compare options with you.1
Will dental insurance cover dental implants?
Often only in part, if at all. Many plans treat implants as major work, covered at a lower share, or leave them out.
Waiting periods and the yearly maximum can limit what is paid. Ask for the plan’s list of covered services before you book.1
- Is it listed as major work?
- The share the plan pays
- The yearly maximum
- The waiting period
How much does a hearing aid cost, and does insurance cover it?
Hearing aids cost hundreds to several thousand dollars. Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids for adults. Health insurance companies generally do not cover them, although some do.
Some standalone plans include a hearing benefit. Over-the-counter hearing aids are sold without an exam, for mild to moderate hearing loss.2
Does insurance cover vision?
Many health plans leave out adult vision. You can buy insurance that covers only vision or only dental.
Vision plans usually help with eye exams and part of the cost of glasses.3
