How much is health insurance a month?
If you qualify for a tax credit, you are expected to pay at most a set share of your income toward the benchmark silver plan, from 2.15% to 10.22% for 2027. The credit pays the rest. A cheaper plan, such as bronze, costs you less than that; a pricier one costs more.
Without a credit, you pay the full price, which depends mostly on your age, where you live and the plan you pick.1
Examples for 2027
The most each household would be expected to pay per month toward the benchmark silver plan, after the tax credit. If the benchmark costs less than this where you live, you pay its lower full price. Examples, not quotes: your price depends on your county and the plan you choose, and is set when you enroll.12
| Household and yearly income | Share of income | About per month |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person, $25,000 | 4.6% | $96 |
| 1 person, $40,000 | 8.7% | $289 |
| 1 person, $55,000 | 10.2% | $468 |
| Family of 4, $50,000 | 4.4% | $182 |
| Family of 4, $80,000 | 8.4% | $558 |
| Family of 4, $110,000 | 10.2% | $937 |
What decides your price
With a credit: your household income and size, which plan you pick compared with the benchmark, and tobacco use (a tobacco surcharge can add up to 50%, and the credit doesn’t cover it).
Without a credit, or above the 2027 limit: your age, your county, tobacco use, and the plan. Insurers can’t charge more for health conditions on Marketplace plans.
On a very low income, Medicaid may cost little or nothing instead.34

The monthly price is only half of it
A low premium can come with a deductible in the thousands. Compare what you would pay in a bad year, not just each month.5
